"Τα μάτια μου δεν είδαν τόπον ενδοξότερον από τούτο το αλωνάκι"

Παρασκευή 6 Απριλίου 2012

Εν όψη της 186ης Επετείου της Εξόδου σας παρουσιάζουμε μια ξεχωριστή μουσική προσέγγιση από νεανικά Rock και Heavy Metal συγκροτήματα για το δράμα της "Εξόδου".

Πως μπορεί το δράμα των Ελεύθερων Πολιορκημένων να αποτελέσει πηγή έμπνευσης ακόμα και στις μέρες μας και δη σε νέα παιδιά με συγχρονούς ήχους;

  • Leonidas Aretakis – Lead vocals, guitar, songwriting

  • Johan Törnblom – Backing vocals, bass
  • Jon Wessling – Backing vocals, lead guitar
  • Martin Nordkvist – Synthesizer, keyboard, tambourine

  • Επικοινωνήσαμε μαζί τους και είμαστε στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας παρουσιάσουμε το μήνυμά τους!

The title of the song comes from the Delacroix painting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greece_on_the_Ruins_of_Missolonghi)
The song is inspired by the heroic struggle for independence of the Greeks during the 1820s. I'm also very into Romantic poetry, like Lord Byron and the others that found great inspiration in the Greek struggle. Messolonghi is in these lyrics a metaphor for a people's struggle against what seems to be inevitable fate. So the song uses other examples of the same logic even though the actual events of the 1820's are not directly referenced.
My father is from Greece (Creta) so I've got roots there. I understand and speak the language, but my writing is very bad so that's why I'm using English now.
The lyrics, with comments after each section:
    A rhythm of cogs
    Backing the dancing smog
    The black steely sky
    Is turning the colours shy
    A crude swarm of ants
    Whose reason the night enchants
    A nocturnal breath
Of the cooling embrace of death
[A terrifying image of ants/workers at a factory, surrounded by smog and a dark sky]
Images pale turn thirsty hearts ablaze
A poor man’s symphony for gloomy days
Envision the ugly brush that paints our dreams
    and spells our screams
[Can these stories inspire, or are they just entertainment for the sad?]
    A rhythm of clocks
    Backing the dancing chalk
    A black steely pen
    Writing the fates of men
    No God need exist
    For its anti-Laplacean twist:
    Avoiding the lies
    Truth is the best disguise
[On how we trust the truths of history that we didn't write ourselves]
Images pale turn thirsty hearts ablaze
A poor man’s symphony for gloomy days
    Lances of passion desperately hurled
    into the world
    Their spirits are torn
    Their harnesses worn
    The last zealots’ red tears
    Running from the spears:
    History’s thorns
[The Zealot's did something similar to the people Messolonghi; they were Jews that desperately defied the Roman Empire. The chorus is about the heroism in defying what seems to be the inevitable way of history, in not accepting what seems to be the only way even though it means death. History does not move forward smoothly, there is also much suffering along the way, and this is what we mean by history's thorns.]
    A rhythm of drops
    Backing the dancing fog
    Arms stretched in a grin
As the teeth cut into their skin
    What good is a crown?
A head cannot fall but down
In the eye of the storm
It all seems to suit the norm
[This image is mixed; crown could mean tree crown (which means the verse is about us destroying the environment) but that all heads fall down could also mean the head of a king; all empires will eventually come to an end.]
It’s time to leave the tower
    We are wolves
    And this is our hour
We’ll assail when the sun’s asleep
    And by this sea
    No poplars will weep
[It's the middle of the night, and it's time to attack. Maybe this is about doing something today to change things. "No poplars will weep" is about the Greek legend of Icaros that flew too close to the sun and crashed into the sea. His arrogance caused his fall, and the poplars in the Mediterranean region grew out of his mother's tears according to mythology.]
Please ask me if any questions you may have!
We will film our concert this Thursday and this song will be played. I'll send you a link.
    Warm regards,
